Since I was a child I have always looked up to my Grandfather. He has been my inspiration for every walk in life and I aspire to be like him.
My Grandfather left school and started working in a drawing office before hearing that British Airways were looking for pilots. When they offered him a place to train for them, he jumped at the opportunity and grabbed it with both hands. He completed his training in Perth in Scotland on ‘Course 44’- much like how L3 have CP’s (I was part of CP149). Throughout his career he flew a diverse fleet of aircraft for the flag carrier including the VC-10 and Boeing 747, 757 and 767.
It is through my Grandfather that I fell in love with flying, and I have been lucky enough to have followed in his footsteps and be a part of the aviation industry.
I began training with L3 Airline Academy, which was CTC Aviation at the time, in August 2016. My journey took me from Ground School training in Southampton in the UK, to flight training up until CPL in Hamilton, New Zealand, before returning to the UK in Bournemouth for my IR flying phase. The course finished up right where it started, going full circle to complete AQC in Southampton. Completing the course and receiving my Flight Crew License was such a rewarding and exciting time for me. It was a proud day that I stood next to my Grandfather, his license in his hand and my brand new license in mine. Since finishing training I have completed an Instructors course and rating and found enjoyment in teaching others what I have learned myself. I now teach at my local flight school at Blackbushe. It is great to be able to pass on everything I have learned so far to likeminded people.
Like my Grandfather, I am also interested in flying for an airline, and hopefully soon I will be both instructing and airline flying. I’m ever grateful to have had such a strong inspiration through my Grandfather and making him proud is a really great feeling for me.
